Piano Concerto for the Left Hand
Chopin and others
Yasuyo Segawa
An extraordinary fate shaped the international career of the Japanese pianist Yasuyo Segawa. At the age of 17, she lost the function of her right hand due to focal dystonia. Yet her great talent and strong will prevailed: she focused on piano playing with the left hand and went on to win 12 international awards. In fact, there are numerous works that were composed or arranged in this way. Her impressive virtuosity and orchestral sound make one forget that it is performed with only one hand.
