Maribor Ballet – Stabat Mater & Carmina Burana | Dance
Sunday, 19 April 2026 – 20:30

The Maribor National Theatre is one of Slovenia’s leading cultural institutions, with almost a century of history. Over the past twenty years, under the artistic direction of Edward Clug, its ballet company has followed in the footsteps of major international companies, presenting innovative and visually striking dance performances. The Maribor Ballet has performed at the world’s most prestigious festivals and stages: Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival (USA), Stars of the White Nights at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Festival of Firsts in Pittsburgh, Arts Festival in Singapore, Biarritz Festival in France, O Boticário na Dança in Brazil, Dance Festival in Tel Aviv, Sintra Festival in Portugal, Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur (Canada), Seoul International Dance Festival (South Korea), at Piccolo Teatro in Milan, Dance Open Festival in Saint Petersburg, as well as tours in the Netherlands, Italy, and the countries of the former Yugoslavia.

Over the years, Clug has built strong relationships with established companies such as Stuttgart Ballet and Zurich Ballet, for which he has created several choreographies, and more recently has collaborated with Nederlands Dans Theater. In Modena, the Ballet presents a double evening with two choreographies by its director. Stabat Mater, set to Pergolesi’s eponymous score, transforms the traditional biblical subject into an ironic depiction of everyday life, giving it new intimacy through the timelessness of dance and bringing our personal understanding of the mother-child relationship into the present. The second work is a powerful and moving choreographic interpretation of Carmina Burana, the famous scenic cantata composed by Carl Orff in the 1930s, inspired by medieval goliardic texts. Clug highlights its primal energy and youthful audacity, giving it renewed strength through an implicit sense of torment, renewal, and regeneration.
