When Cryptopsy emerged from Montreal, Quebec, in 1993, their groundbreaking blend of technical skill and brutal intensity left an indelible mark on extreme metal.
Cryptopsy immediately demonstrated their unparalleled musicianship with their debut album. "Blasphemy Made Flesh" (1994) laid the foundation for a career marked by innovation and boundary-pushing. Their next album cemented the band's position as pioneers of death metal. "None So Vile" (1996) earned them critical acclaim and a loyal fanbase around the world.
"Brutal and beautifully chaotic... a must-have for any extreme metal fan's collection," wrote Metal Hammer, naming "None So Vile" one of the best death metal albums of all time.
Cryptopsy has continually evolved throughout its storied career. Their 30-year discography defies categorization, ranging from the jazz fusion of "Whisper Supremacy" (1998) to the avant-garde rhythms of "Once Was Not" (2005) to the melodic experimentation of "The Unspoken King" (2008). In
2012, Cryptopsy released their eponymous album, signaling a return to their brutal roots. Three years later, the band embarked on "The Book of Suffering," an ambitious two-track EP that Decibel called "an absolute blast."
Nearly 30 years into their career, Cryptopsy won the JUNO Award for Best Metal/Hard Music Album for their latest album, "As Gomorrah Burns" (2023). This was followed by another prestigious honor: they joined Death to All on a North American tour.
In addition to their acclaimed discography, their tireless work ethic and reputation as fiery live performers have made Cryptopsy one of the most influential and respected metal bands. While their legacy is firmly established, the band remains committed to expanding their extreme music. Now that they've signed to Season of Mist, they're gearing up to release new music as well as definitive reissues of their classic catalog.
