PLOT

After being forced to serve in the house of Admeto (king of Fere in Thessaly) to atone for a fault, the god Apollo obtained from the Moire that the man could escape death on condition that another sacrificed himself for him. Only his wife, Alcesti, accepts, and despite the efforts Apollo is unable to remove her from Death. And so, Alcesti is about to die, after receiving a promise from her husband not to replace her with other women. After the death of Alcesti, Eracles also arrives in Fere: in a break from his efforts the hero asks Admeto for hospitality, who guarantees it even if in mourning. From a slave, Eracle learns that the dead woman is Admeto's wife, and decides to face Death and bring Alcesti back to her husband, among the living: after convincing himself to take off the woman's veil, Admeto discovers that it is his wife, who will have to remain silent for three days before being completely returned to life.
