Anniversary: 200 Years of Johann Strauss (Son)

Join us in celebrating the grand 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss (Son) in 2025!

Since 1966, the unique Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra has been carrying on the artistic legacy of the legendary Vienna Strauss Ensemble, which was dissolved by Eduard Strauss I in 1901 in New York. The grandson and last professional musician of the Strauss dynasty, Eduard Strauss II, revived the idea of the family-owned ensemble with the founding of the Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra. Since then, the orchestra has performed all over the world, presenting the works of the Strauss dynasty, especially the celebratory melodies of their artistic ancestors, the two "Waltz Kings," Johann Strauss (Father) and Johann Strauss (Son).

In 2025, we celebrate the grand 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss (Son). In honor of this anniversary, the 42 musicians of the Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra, along with conductor Johannes Wildner, congratulate the jubilarian with their personal favorite works by Johann Strauss (Son). Thus, in 2025, the jubilarian will be celebrated with 43 favorite works - a selection of these favorites will be performed in the Herkulessaal in the Munich Residenz, featuring 14 to 15 pieces.

It is a great honor to be able to play in the prestigious Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra. The orchestra's musicians are members of Austria's most renowned orchestras, such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the Tonkünstler Orchestra Lower Austria, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra.

At the helm of the orchestra will be former Vienna Philharmonic member Johannes Wildner, one of Austria's leading conductors, who collaborates with other renowned orchestras such as the Arena di Verona, the Prague State Opera, the London Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic.

Munich Residence

The Munich Residence served as the seat of government and residence of the Bavarian dukes, electors and kings from 1508 to 1918. What began in 1385 as a castle in the north-eastern corner of the city (the Neuveste, or new citadel), was transformed by the rulers over the centuries into a magnificent palace, its buildings and gardens extending further and further into the town.

The rooms and art collections spanning a period that begins with the Renaissance, and extends via the early Baroque and Rococo epochs to Neoclassicism, bear witness to the discriminating taste and the political ambition of the Wittelsbach dynasty.
