A former wunderkind who is today the recipient of the most prestigious awards and one of the most respected pianists of the last century, Marta Argerich has been a commanding figure on the world’s concert stages ever since her victory at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1965. Over the course of her career, she has performed many of the most demanding works of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and her broad repertoire spans composers from Bach to Shostakovich. In partnership with the finest orchestras, she is a regular guest at the most important concert venues and festivals in Europe, America and Asia. In 1999 she founded the Martha Argerich International Piano Competition and Festival. She is also an enthusiastic performer of chamber music, frequently collaborating with close musical friends such as the late Ivry Gitlis, Mischa Maisky, Gidon Kremer and Daniel Barenboim. Together with the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, she will perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, under the direction of her former husband, the Swiss conductor Charles Dutoit, a recent recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal, who conducted the opening concert of last year’s 68th Ljubljana Festival.
